Leland S. Purvis, aged 62, a life-long resident of Livingston Manor,
died of pneumonia, Thursday, October 12, at his camp at Inlet,
Hamilton County, where he had gone nine days before to spend the
hunting season, as was his custom each year. He was the only child of
James C. and Kate Read Purvis. His father kept what was known as "The
Hotel" on Jacktown Hill, then being called Purvis. He leaves no near
relatives."
Sullivan County Record, October 26, 1933
Found this notation in the Republican Watchman December 2, 1892
"Leland Purvis has 'Jacktown' dressed up like McGinty in its best suit of clothes."
Leland died at his camp in the Adirondacks, a bachelor. He was the only child of James C. and Katherine Read Purvis and grandson of James and Abigail Jackson Purvis. He left much of his sizable estate to Syracuse University as well as some to the LM Methodist Church and cemetery. His father, James C. kept what was known as "The Hotel" on Jacktown hill. Leland operated a grist mill for a while but was in fierce competition with another resident, Byron Gray who tried to sue Purvis.
