INDEX

[24208] "As the giver of all good and perfect gifts has spared to us our
mother, Abigail Purvis, we, as a united family, met together on the
26th day of April, 1879, to celebrate with her at the house of J.C.
Purvis the eighty-second anniversary which God in mercy has spared
her to see. The day was magnificent. One of those days that showed
the goodness of God in its warm, yellow sunshine, that unfolds,
brings forth the beauty and loveliness of nature. And with the music
of birds around us, came sons and sons-in-law, daughters and
daughters-in-law, grandsons, grand-daughters and great grand-
children, until the family numbered about 24.

"The family, as well as mother earth, had thrown off the winter
mantle and came forth with the light heartedness of spring. "The
laughs applauded and the jokes went round." The aged mother, though
in failing health, felt her age renewed and could but think of her
youth, when she, with her husband, who had passed on before and
awaits her on the other shore, had been happy participants on similar
occasions. When after the husking bee by the light of autumn moon,
she had been led forth to tip the light fantastic toe in the French
forth or Virginia Reel. "O! for the spirit of youth." After a few
solos and a little good piano music, the Purvis family gathered
around the well laden table, not turkey and plum pudding, but beef
and the good things of life. After a very able blessing was asked by
the aged mother, the repast began. When justice had been done to the
dinner, the family repaired to the setting with their gifts as a
token of love and rememberance of their aged mother.

"Thanking her master for her children and sparing her life to see
them grown to be honorable men and women, and successful in this
life, her prayer is for their success in the world to come. If her
life is spared to see another anniversary, she wishes to meet the
whole entire family, and if it should not be the will of God to meet
them on earth, she hopes to meet them around the thrown of grace.

"After spending a few more hours pleasantly together, and the
afternoon drawing to a close, the good-byes were said and the party
came to an end, in hopes to meet again. P."

[13824] I'll try to codense what I have from Brinkman(1945). 1st generation Jan Coster Van Auken was a trader in Albany NY in 1654 to 1672, and perhaps later. He was a blacksmith and a dealer in houses andlots. He was a commissioner appointed to treat with the Indians, and could speak the launguage of the six nations. On Dec.22,1654, he had ashop at what is now steamboat landing and adjoining the first Dutch church. He agreed that the church should be built on his lot. His home was at the corner of Broadway and Maiden Lane in Albany. In 1655 on Feb. 2, Cornelis Vos gave names to some of the houses in Albany. He named Jan Van Auken's home the "Quart measure".March 4, 1690, Jan Vinnagen and two others were ordered to inspect goods in the houses at Albany, for goods that may be exported. His wife was Elsie Jans. Their child was Mariness born about 1660. On Mat 7, 1661 he was granted a lot in Beverwyck.
