Joel Kimball Diary - 1874 |

A long lost journal, written over one
hundred and thirty five years ago and found over two thousand miles away,
offers an unusual perspective of the Town of Rockland's history, this year
of the township's bicentennial. Though simply written, the images that
appear are vivid, forgotten characters from long ago are brought back to
life and the era defined by one who lived and, fortunately, recorded it. |

Summer of 1984
- A stroke of Luck - Like any auction, the box of items went to the highest bidder
Chris Kneer. The
auction was somewhere in Colorado during the summer of 1984. Inside the box,
amongst the other articles, was a small, leather bound journal, its pages
yellowed from age and its penciled notations fading into graphite dust.
Inside the front cover, though, was the plain and simple inscription; "Joel
Kimball, Purvis." With names over a century old and places almost
two-thousand miles away, Chris Kneer was able to
determine its origin and generously loaned the diary to the Sullivan County
Historical Society on September 11, 1984. Today, it still remains within the
museum's archives, yet to be reclaimed by the highest bidder for this
window to our local history. - Fred =========================================================
