Doctor, preacher, bricklayer, carpenter, farmer, a maker of wagon wheels, and last but not least, an outstanding husband, father and neighbor. There were those who maintained that Grandfather Colyer was as near a saint as ever walked the earth. He was loved and revered by all. He was a godly man, walking always closely with the Lord. Many times he stated that he had never met a stranger, that all people were his brothers and sisters. He believed in the brotherhood of man and felt that each individual is truly his 'brother's keeper'. Grandfather Colyer was our maternal grandparent; born in Gosport, Indiana, he left there with his parents when he was seven years old. They migrated to Missouri, where Grandpa eventually settled in West Plains, Missouri and made his home. By that time he was grown and married Charlotte Grimmett. He was a man possessing a great compassion for others. The latchstring of his door was always out; there was always room at his table for the visitor or the hungry. No one ever left without first partaking of food. Perhaps the fare was only pork, wild greens, and cornbread, but what more could one ask. grandma's cornbread was a delicious treat in itself. Grandfather Colyer was Irish, of medium height, well built, with black, wavy hair, the bluest of eyes and had a beautiful, fair complexion, a kind peculiar to many of the Irish. Grandpa was always on call. Day or night they would come or send for him from far to near: to administer to the sick, preach a funeral service, build a coffin, bury the dead, comfort the bereaved. He would never take payment for anything, and the valley people soon learned to never mention the word 'pay' to him. The very thought was distasteful to him and hurt him deeply. Surely here it did apply " - - - -Freely ye have received, freely give." Matthew Chapter 10:8 Elsie J. Cummings and Wavie J. Charlton, "Survival Pioneer Indian and Wilderness Lore," 1971
