The family came to the US on 17Mar1911. The family left Gaanderen, Holland because of religious persecution. They spent 11 days on a ship and had their first taste of ice cream while on board.

Leo was 12 years old and his parents sent him to live with Henry L. Brugman. Leo worked on the Brugman farm for room and board.
