Memories form Greg De Blase - LMCS Class of 1950

James Brannigan, Robert Hartmann, Jack Sherwood, Francis DeVoe, Daniel Krupp, Gregory De Blase, George Van Steenberg. circa 1946.

Between Brannigan and Hartmann is the partial name of one of our Ladies who served --Mary
Johnston and just above Hartmann, the two Stars of two well known Manor Boys, who made up the fabric of Livingston Manor - Greg

The photograph of Gregory DeBlase and his fellow scout-mates on Greg's "Memories" photographic collection at the LM Home site, has the young men standing before the patriotic board assembled during World War II, signifying those from the Manor area who served in the armed forces during that conflict. As noted by Greg, those names on the makeshift memorial that are accompanied with stars were members of our community who did not return. Only two names with this designation were listed: Jay Burton and Nelson McArthur.

In fact, those names that were listed within the same block of names, those located behind scouts Bob Hartman, Jack Sherwood and Frances DeVoe, were all local boys who perished while answering their nation's call to arms. By my count I see twelve names, which later, when the bronze tablet was memorialized at the Legion Hall in the fifties, would expand to fourteen. More names, those of families that were no longer living in the Manor area during the years of the war, were not included and would have further increased this number.

The names of those who were lacking the "star" were;

Everett Owen
John "Gus" Wood
Burr DeWitt
Bill McCune
Paul Rheimheimer
Clarence Sprague
Bob Porter
Larry Green

And those names partially hidden behind Young Jack Sherwood would most likely be those of;

The "....an" would be the final letters of the name of Jack Kaplan and the "...oyd" would be the finat letters of the name of Oscar Lloyd

In 1954, this "honor roll" list of World War II veterans, consisting of all 390 names of those who served in the armed forces, were placed on the bronze tablet set in the granit stone, and dedicated at its present location in front of the American Legion Hall. The two new additional names that were not included on the earlier memorial were those of Leslie Edwards and Harry Sturdevant.   Fred
